Szécsény was founded on the edge of the plateau emerging from Ipoly valley at the Hungarian - Slovakian border.




During its history first it was a town (1334), then Turkish times it was a border fortress (1540-1683).
In 1705 II. Rákóczi Ferenc was elected controller sovereign here.

The rich history of the town is shown by the inside town with its significant group of historic monuments which is surrounded by walls and bastion.
The Franciscan church and monastery's sacristy whit its stellar vault (14. cent.) is one of the most beautiful Gothic hall in the country.
Its most beautiful building is the Forgách castle, the valuable element of the rural baroque architecture, which was build on the walls of the medieval inner castle and in which Kubinyi Ferenc Museum received place.
Besides this, regional historical exhibitions can be observed in Kézművesház, Pintér Sándor
memorial building and Tűztorony which became the symbol of the town. Szécsény with it's restored streets, squares and its public buildings can be worthily called the most spectacular town of North Hungary.
